How to Play Smarter Pickleball — 4 Rules That Change Everything
Most players think the fastest path to improvement is better technique. And technique matters — but here is what we see every day on the court: players with great technique losing to players with average technique. The difference is not the shots. It is the decisions.
Smart pickleball beats hard pickleball almost every time. Here are the four rules we teach every player we coach.
Rule 1: Play to the Score
Most players play the same way at 10-2 as they do at 2-10. That is not smart pickleball. Your strategy should change based on where the points stand.
✅ Ahead by 3 or more: dink more, attack less, make them earn every point
✅ Behind by 3 or more: be more aggressive, take the kitchen early, force the issue
✅ Even score: play your highest percentage game — your most reliable shots to your best targets
Before every shot, ask yourself: what is the score right now? Let the answer guide how you play that point. It sounds simple. Almost nobody does it.
Rule 2: Target the Weakness — Every Single Point
Smart players identify their opponent’s weakness in the first five points and attack it relentlessly for the rest of the match. Most players hit to wherever feels comfortable for them — not to where their opponent struggles. That is backwards.
In the first five points of any game, test three things:
✅ How do they handle the backhand?
✅ What happens when the ball drops at their feet in transition?
✅ Can they handle wide balls to their non-dominant side?
Find the weakness. Then go there on every important point. You do not need to be subtle about it. At the recreational level, most players will not even adjust.
Rule 3: Patience Wins
Recreational players tend to end the point too quickly. They attack the first ball that is slightly attackable — not the right ball. Smart players wait.
❌ Do not attack just because a ball is slightly high
❌ Do not rush the rally because you feel pressure
✅ Have a plan before the rally starts — decide what ball you are waiting for
✅ When that ball comes, be completely decisive. No hesitation.
The mental cue: “Wait for it.” Patient between shots. Explosive on the right shot. The player who stays calm the longest usually wins the rally.
Rule 4: Reset Before You Attack — Never Force It
This is the rule that separates players who plateau from players who keep improving. When you are out of position, under pressure, or the ball is at your feet — your only job is to reset back to a neutral dink rally.
❌ No attack from a defensive position
❌ No crazy shot when you are stretched wide
✅ Reset, regroup, and wait for a better ball
✅ A good reset gives you another chance — a forced attack usually ends the point against you
The mindset shift: stop trying to win the point on every shot. Start thinking about getting back to neutral. Neutral is where you win from.

Why Your Shots Keep Popping Up — And How to Fix It
If you have ever hit a shot and watched it float up like a beach ball, you are not alone. Pop-ups are one of the most common problems we see at every skill level. The good news is that they almost always come from the same handful of habits — and every single one is fixable.
Here are the core principles we teach, plus how they apply to each shot in your game.
The Three Fundamentals (Apply to Every Shot)
Before we break down individual shots, these three principles apply across the board:
✅ Minimize wrist movement. Most pop-ups happen because players use their wrist to generate the shot. Instead, drive the ball forward using your arm and shoulder. The wrist stays quiet.
✅ Lighten your grip. On a scale of 1 to 10, your grip pressure should sit around a 2 or 3. A tight grip transfers energy into the ball and sends it flying. A loose grip absorbs that energy and gives you control.
✅ Contact out in front. If the ball gets behind your body, the shot goes high. Every time. Make contact in front of you and you immediately eliminate one of the biggest causes of floaty balls.
Dinking
❌ Do not slap or flick at the dink with your wrist
✅ Use an open paddle face and push forward through the ball
✅ For extra control, brush the back of the ball from low to high — that light topspin keeps the ball skimming the net instead of floating over it
Resets
The reset is not a swing. It is an absorption.
✅ Widen your stance and get low in your legs
✅ Freeze your paddle out in front of you
❌ Do not take a big backswing — you are absorbing your opponent’s pace, not adding your own
➡️ The less you do, the better the reset. Let the ball come to the paddle.
Drives
The most common drive mistake: players lift their head or chest right before contact. When your body goes up, the ball goes up.
✅ Keep your weight moving forward and downward through the shot
✅ Tilt your paddle face slightly down at contact to generate topspin
❌ Do not look up to see where the ball is going — trust the shot and stay down
Volleys
Two words: swing forward.
❌ Do not swing upward
✅ Keep your swing short and punch toward your target
➡️ Think of the volley as a controlled block that redirects the ball — not a full swing
🏁 The Bottom Line
Consistency is the goal. A slightly high ball that stays in play is always better than a perfect shot that goes into the net. Build these habits one at a time and you will watch your unforced errors drop fast.
