Universal Rackets tennis coaching on court

Tennis Clinics, Lessons & Classes Near Philadelphia

Tennis is where Universal Rackets started, and it is still at the heart of what we do. We run tennis clinics for adults and juniors at township parks across the Main Line and the Philadelphia suburbs, from your very first swing to competitive match play. Philadelphia Magazine named us one of the Best Places to Learn Tennis. One thing to know up front: a clinic, a class and a group lesson all mean the same thing here. Racquets are provided, so all you need is sneakers.

Who Our Tennis Clinics Are For

Adults at every level, and kids from age 5 up. Most people who join us have never taken a lesson before.

Adults. Our adult clinics welcome complete beginners, people coming back to the game after years away, and regular players who want to sharpen their strokes. Every clinic is sorted by level, so you are always on court with players close to your own speed. You do not need a partner. You just need to want to play.

Kids and youth. Junior tennis is grouped by age and by level. Ages 5 to 7 learn on smaller courts with softer, slower balls so they can rally early and enjoy it. Ages 8 to 12 build the full set of strokes and start playing real points. Ages 13 to 17 work on match play, serving and strategy. For ages 1.5 to 5, our Ready Set Rackets parent and child classes introduce the game through play.

What a Tennis Clinic Looks Like

A coach, a few players at a similar level, and a lot of balls hit in an hour.

Every clinic runs with a low coach-to-player ratio, so nobody stands in a line waiting for a turn. A typical session starts with a quick warm-up, moves into focused work on one or two strokes, then finishes with live points or games so what you practiced shows up in real play. Coaches give feedback the whole way through.

Clinics run in sessions of five to six weeks, meeting once a week at the same day and time. You see the same coach and the same group each week, which is how strokes actually change and how most of our regulars found new hitting partners.

Levels We Teach

Beginner is for anyone who has never played or has only hit a handful of times. We start with grips, the basic forehand and backhand, how to keep score and how to serve so it goes in.

Advanced beginner is for players who can rally a little and know the rules, but want more consistency, better footwork and a serve they can trust.

Intermediate is for players who rally comfortably and play matches. We work on volleys, spin, point patterns and the decisions that win games.

Not sure which level fits? Pick beginner or advanced beginner and tell your coach on day one. We move players between groups when it helps.

What to Bring

Sneakers, comfortable clothes and a water bottle. We provide racquets and balls at every clinic, so you can try tennis before buying anything. If you already own a racket, bring it along.

Seasons, Winter Sessions and Summer Camps

We run tennis year round in four seasons: fall, winter, spring and summer. Fall and spring sessions are outdoors at township parks and school courts. Winter sessions move indoors at select locations where our township partners have gym space, and the town pages list what is running each winter. Summer brings both weekly clinics and full-week summer tennis camps for kids ages 6 to 14.

How Registration Works

Registration depends on the town. For many locations you register right here on universalrackets.com, pick your clinic and pay securely online in a couple of minutes. For township-run programs such as Lower Merion and Springfield, you register through the township's own recreation page, and we link you straight there from the town page. Either way, every listing shows the dates, times, level and age group before you sign up. Sessions fill in the last two weeks before they start, so registering early is the safest way to get your first choice.

Common Questions About Our Tennis Clinics

What age can my child start tennis clinics?

Junior tennis clinics start at age 5. Kids are grouped by age and level, typically ages 5 to 7, ages 8 to 12 and ages 13 to 17. For ages 1.5 to 5, our Ready Set Rackets parent and child classes introduce tennis through games little kids love.

Do I need my own racket?

No. We provide racquets and balls at every clinic, for adults and juniors. If you already own a racket you are welcome to bring it. Just come in sneakers and comfortable clothes with a water bottle.

Do you offer private tennis lessons?

Yes. Private and semi-private lessons are available at most of our locations. Clinics are the core of what we do, so private lessons are arranged directly with our team. Email [email protected] with your town and goals and we will match you with a coach.

Are there indoor tennis programs in winter?

Yes, at select locations. When the weather turns we move winter sessions into gyms and indoor facilities where our township partners have them, such as the Sulpizio Gym in Radnor. Check your town page for the current winter schedule.

What is the difference between a tennis clinic and a tennis lesson?

At Universal Rackets a clinic, a class and a group lesson are the same thing: a coach-led session with a handful of players at a similar level, meeting once a week for five to six weeks. A private lesson is one player and one coach, built around your specific goals.
